Less than a month has passed since full implementation began Entry/exit systems of the European Union (EES), and the first requests for postponing its application are coming.
A few days ago, the Serbian consulate in Greece announced the potential cancellation of the system for tourists from Serbia who plan to vacation in that country, and the airline Ryanair requests the suspension of the implementation of the system until next September.
Ryanair has asked a number of European governments to suspend the implementation of the European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES) until September.
The company has sent letters to the governments of the 29 countries that have introduced EES, urging them to delay the implementation of the system until September and to ensure the smooth functioning of airports for passengers this summer, the company announced on its website.
The airline said it is trying to prevent a situation where passengers face long waits at passport control at airports during the summer season.
Possible temporary suspension of the system on the way to Greece
From June 1 to August 30, the EES will be suspended for Serbian citizens traveling to Greece, it will be applied at night and will not affect additional crowds, confirmed the Consul General of Serbia in Thessaloniki, Jelena Vujić Obradović for Prva Television.
Vujić Obradović stated that, although there will be no official document confirming the suspension of the EES between Greece and Serbia, there are promises and assurances based on good relations between the two countries.
As she said, the EES for Serbian citizens should be simultaneous from June 1 to August 30. It will be applied at night, but it will not affect additional crowds - she stated.
In practice, this means that during peak periods, controls could be reduced to a basic document check, without detention due to biometric procedures.
Director of Utah, Aleksandar Senicic, recently said that Greece verbally promised the Serbian delegation at the meeting that during the summer tourist season, the EES system will not be fully implemented at the borders for citizens of Serbia.
"We took concrete steps, we had meetings with the Greeks, and at the end of May we will have a high-level meeting in Athens, and previously in Thessaloniki with the director of the border police, with whom we expect an agreement on the opening of the maximum number of crossings and the expansion of lanes from six to ten, and additional lanes for buses, in order to speed up the flow of passengers in the peak season," Seničić told Prva Television.
EES is a new digital system for controlling entry into the Schengen zone, which involves taking the biometric data of passengers, such as fingerprints and photography, which replaces the previous stamping of passports.
