"The monument should not function as a mere illustration of the event, but as a sign that transcends and thereby transforms it. The aesthetics of 'pressure', unquestionably evoked by the monolithic, massive stone slab, literally reproduces the fall and the pressure canopies. "Instead of transforming the tragedy with a new, healing meaning, this solution, on the contrary, confirms and even repeats the physical characteristics of the tragedy itself," Plenum said.
In a statement, the experts of the Academic Plenum assess that this conceptual solution looks more like a monument to what killed people, than to them and their lost lives, because the author ignores the main topic - the victims of the canopy fall.
"That's why the solution was adopted rather as an anti-monument rather than a true monument that should honor the victims under the canopy", pointed out the Academic Planum, with the assessment that this conceptual solution fails to establish a space of memory between the victims, physical space and the future.
"Instead, it remains closed, unambiguous and devoid of communication, reducing a complex tragedy to a banal and literal form. In this sense, the proposed monument only demonstrates the elements of the canopy with its form and material, and therefore we can evaluate it as a complete failure of the theme", they point out.
The Academic Plenum points out that the explanation of the decision states that the monument is a "warning".
"We ask ourselves: to whom and for what specifically was this warning addressed? When there is no indictment, let alone a verdict, this monument can only be understood as a warning to citizens not to walk around the station, or anywhere in the public space where any 'reconstructions' have been carried out," the statement said.
The academic plenum considers that monument to be the height of cynicism of this government, but also of the author who publicly supported the government responsible for the death of 16 people at the railway station in Novi Sad.
