"Stop the violence": protest of educators in Belgrade

Representatives of the Independent Union of Educators of Serbia believe that the resignation of the previous Minister of Education, Branko Ružić, is a good step, but not enough for complete changes.

The protest of the Independent Union of Educational Workers of Serbia gathered today in Nemanja Street in Belgrade not only the employees of the education system, but also the citizens who came to support them after the unprecedented tragedy in recent Serbia.

NSPRS President Dušan Kokot said that educators no longer want just cosmetic changes, but essential changes. In this regard, they marked the resignation of the Minister of Education Branko Ružić as a step in the right direction, stressing that it is not enough for a complete change.

The trade union demands changes to the Criminal Code and the Law on the Basics of the Education System.

Namely, in December of last year, NSPRS submitted three requests to the Ministry of Education, and none of those recommendations was adopted in the proposed amendments to the law.

The proposed measures, Kokot reminded, are the introduction of the possibility of suspending students who repeat bad behavior, preventing the possibility of anonymous reports to the educational inspection, because, as he stated, they were misused in order to put pressure on educational workers, and to be additionally protected by the criminal code. educators.

It is planned that the participants of the protest will walk to the building of the Government of Serbia, where they will also leave their demands.

Kokot also said that after the meeting in front of the Government, the participants of the protest will be invited to walk peacefully to the elementary school "Vladislav Ribnikar" and "express their sadness and pain because of what happened there last week".

Kokot also said that on Saturday they sent a letter to other education unions to join the protest, but there was no response.

Education employees, who are members of several trade unions, suspended work in schools on Thursday and Friday across Serbia, after a student (13) of the "Vladislav Ribnikar" Elementary School in Belgrade killed eight students and a security guard of that school, and injured six more student and teacher.
