"Study at UNIRSM have woken up Serbia", it was said on Thursday evening at a gathering in front of the Banovina building, which was held on the occasion of one year since the conflict between citizens, police and supporters Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in front of that party's premises in Novi Sad organized by the Citizens' Assemblies of Novi Sad.
One of the representatives of the Citizens' Assemblies, Aleksandar Bjelobrk, said that the citizens gathered to remember the events that began "in the most terrible way, with the murder of 16 fellow citizens", which, he said, reminded them of "the most terrible truth - corruption kills".
Bjelobrk recalled the large protests of citizens that followed the tragedy at the Railway Station in Novi Sad, as well as the blockades of the faculties of the University of Novi Sad.
"We did not know that Novi Sad would build its own resistance movement, but we knew one thing, and that was that we would not allow the crime to be forgotten," said Bjelobrk, stressing that corruption is the cause of the tragedy and that no one has been held accountable for it to this day.
He also recalled November 15, 2024, when Novi Sad stopped and fell silent for the first time in 14 years.
"No speech, no music, only silence and the city standing still," said Bjelobrk.
After the speech, the protest column headed towards Novosadski sajma Street, Stražilovska Street, then Maksima Gorki Street and Liberation Boulevard.
The rally was attended by plainclothes police forces, traffic police and emergency police, which formed a small cordon in Stražilovska Street.
The bus of Milomir Jaćimović was also at the protest, plastered with the slogans "People, why are you silent?", "The magic is losing, because the students are winning", "I don't want to move" and other messages.
Citizens' choirs called for a rally with the message: "We don't stand because we have nowhere to go. We stand because we know what we stand for."
The rally was organized on the occasion of the anniversary of the riots in front of the SNS premises in Stražilovska Street and on the Boulevard of Liberation, when protest participants and supporters of the SNS clashed, with the intervention of the police and the Gendarmerie.
SNS supporters, protected by a police cordon, fired cannon shots and other pyrotechnics at citizens.
Several members of the "Cobra" special unit were also injured in those incidents.
