Citizens' assemblies Novi Sad invited citizens to gather on Friday, September 4, from 19 p.m. at Freedom Square, after the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić announced the cancellation of the meeting of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) planned for the same day and at the same location.
In a post on social networks, after Vučić's decision, the message "Bravo Novosadians! Bravo Serbia!", and the chorus told the citizens: "See you on the free square for free people."
The choirs assessed that the cancellation of the meeting "prevented the outpouring of Çacilization in their city", with the message that Trg slobode is "ours and free" and the announcement of the gathering on Friday at 19:00.
Earlier on Wednesday, Vučić announced that the meeting of SNS scheduled for September 4 is being postponed, citing security circumstances as the reason. He said that people's lives are the most important thing to him and that he does not want a situation in which the police have to protect his supporters from what he said are angry citizens who oppose him.
Vučić postponed the rally in Novi Sad because "the lives of citizens are the most important to him"
Citizens' choirs had previously been preparing for their own gathering for days under the slogan "Stop the zacilization of Novi Sad". The plan was for the participants to gather at four locations from 16 p.m., from where columns from different directions would head towards Freedom Square.
Meanwhile, opposition parties and congregations announced in the past days that their activists had received invitations from the police for "informative interviews". They interpreted it as an attempt to intimidate and pressure the organizers and participants of counter rallies.
