Prime Minister Đuro Macut held a Government session on October 20 in Leskovac, because this city was recently declared the Capital of Serbian Culture in 2026. His predecessors Miloš Vučević and Ana Brnabić did not do that, they did not hold Government sessions in Čačak, Užice and Zrenjanin, the former capitals of Serbian culture. Ana Brnabić attended the opening of the European Capital of Culture in Novi Sad, but it was a ceremony on the occasion of the year of the European Capital, and even because of that she did not hold the Government session in Novi Sad.
Leskovac is the Capital of Culture of Serbia from March 21, 2026 until the same date next year, so there will be enough time to find out why Leskovac is highlighted in this way.
Đuro Macut attended the presentation of the Leskovac Capital of Culture project at the National Museum. On that occasion, it was said that 400 million dinars were earmarked for that project.
The mayor of Leskovac, Goran Cvetanović, announced that next year more than 300 cultural activities will be implemented in Leskovac, stressing that the three key infrastructure investments are the reconstruction of the Army House and its conversion into a multifunctional hall, as well as the construction of a new music school, and the adaptation of the conference exhibition hall of the National Museum.
At the beginning of May last year, the then Minister of Culture Maja Gojković and the then Minister for Public Investments Marko Blagojević signed an agreement with the leaders of Leskovac on the conversion of the Army House into the City Concert Hall and Music School. On that occasion, it was said that most of the works will be financed with loans from the Development Bank of the Council of Europe, around EUR 2,5 million, while the City will invest RSD 10 million.
Six months later, a tender for the execution of the works was announced. The estimated value of the documentation, without performing the works, is estimated at 1.833.333 dinars without VAT.
Judging by media reports, at today's promotion of the Leskovac Capital of Culture program, no mention was made of previous activities regarding the repurposing of the Army House.
