The evidence points to the suspicion that certain persons "deliberately and in advance planned the spread of disinformation" about the alleged use of a "sound cannon", announced the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade
Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade announced that there were no grounds for initiating criminal proceedings for the alleged use "sound cannon" or another device with similar characteristics during the student protest on March 15, 2025 in Belgrade.
As stated, the Prosecutor's Office, in cooperation with other state authorities, analyzed relevant events, data, facts and evidence related to claims about the use of such a device, Beta reported.
On the basis of the collected evidence, VJT concluded that during the protest in Slavija, on the stretch from Terazi through Ulica Kralja Milana to Slavija Square, a "panic chain reaction in the movement of citizens" occurred, but that its cause was not the use of a "sound cannon" or any similar device.
The Prosecutor's Office assessed that because of this, the allegations from the criminal charges, as well as the claims published by certain media and other persons about the alleged use of such a device, are incorrect.
"Since it was established that such devices were not used, that therefore no person can acquire the status of a defendant due to their use, that the harmful consequences that their use could possibly cause were absent due to automaticity, which is why the elements of any criminal offense for which they are prosecuted ex officio have not been realized, the prosecution concluded that there is no place to initiate criminal proceedings against any person in connection with the alleged use of the so-called 'sound cannon' or other similar device", it stated. VJT.
"Deliberately Designed Spreading of Disinformation"
At the same time, the prosecutor's office announced that the collected evidence points to the suspicion that certain persons "deliberately and in advance planned the spread of misinformation" about the alleged use of a "sound cannon" or similar device.
"Then, that unknown persons changed the original audio and video recordings made at the moment of the fifteen-minute silence and published them publicly, so that the processed recordings contain a specific 'whoop' that leads citizens to think that a device that produces this kind of sound was really used, and how such actions led to the spread of panic and public anxiety for several months," VJT claims.
The Prosecutor's Office believes that such actions led to several months of spreading panic and anxiety among citizens, as well as to the involvement of the international community. As stated, international actors also spent their resources on verifying information about whether a "sound cannon" was actually used during the protests in Serbia.
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić he stated the day before that the story about the "sound cannon" was a lie, and that the audio recording posted on social networks after the protest was not authentic. He stated that it was determined that the original recording did not have the same sound, with the announcement that the evidence would be presented to the public in the coming days.
VJT announced that it will take measures within its jurisdiction to identify persons it suspects of having participated in the dissemination of that information, and then initiate criminal proceedings against them. The Prosecutor's Office suspects them of causing and contributing to the spread of untrue information about the alleged use of a "sound cannon" through their deliberate actions.
