Census results: Increased number of educated people in Serbia

Between the two censuses, the number of those with higher and higher education increased by more than six percent, and those who completed secondary school increased by four percent.

The results of the population census organized in Serbia at the end of last year, which relate to education and literacy, have been completed.

Education: According to the data of the Republic Institute of Statistics, most Serbs completed high school - 53,1 percent. Only 17,8 percent completed primary school, 22,4 percent completed high school, and 6,3 percent did not even complete primary school.

The highest number of residents with higher and higher education was recorded in the Belgrade municipalities of Vračar (61,8 percent), Novi Beograd (50,4), Savski venac (53,7) and Stari grad (59,0), while the lowest number was in the municipalities of Malo Crniće (5,6), Žabari (6,1) and Gadžin Han (6,6 percent).

In the period between the two censuses, the share of persons with higher and higher education increased significantly - from 16,24 percent in 2011, it rose to 22,44 percent, and those who completed high school increased by four percent.

The percentage of people over the age of 15 without formal education and with incomplete basic education has more than doubled: from 13,68 to 6,3 percent.

Literacy: Out of a total of 6.014.873 inhabitants of Serbia over the age of ten, 5.976.917 (99,37%) are literate, and 37.956 (0,63%) are illiterate. More than half of the illiterate are 65 and older.

Observed by municipality, the largest share of illiterates is in the municipalities of Bujanovac (3,6 percent), Petrovac na Mlavi and Nova Crnja (2,7), Bojnik (2,6) and Plandište (2,3 percent).

There are more women with higher education, as well as those who are illiterate.

Computer literacy: Of the 5.691.551 inhabitants over the age of 15, 45,73% are computer literate, 29,62% partially know computer work, while 24,19% are computer illiterate.

Computer literate persons are those who can perform three basic activities on a computer (computer, tablet, mobile phone), namely: word processing and creating tables, searching for information on the Internet and electronic communication.
