At least 130 people died, hundreds were injured.
The greatest damage was recorded in the northwest of the country.
Buildings were demolished in several cities, and people were trapped in the ruins.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 107 km near San Jose del Palmar, in Choco, and was felt in major cities across the country.
The highest reported number of deaths was in the western province of Risaralda in Colombia's coffee-growing region, where Governor Juan Diego Patino reported 42 deaths, Reuters writes.
Among the victims, 18 were in the city of Pereira, two in the city of Manizales, and 27 in the department of Valle del Cauca, in which Cali, the third largest city in Colombia, is located, they said, AP reports.
An earthquake measuring 7,4 on the Richter scale struck Colombia, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Institute.
The earthquake was recorded at 7:34 a.m. local time, about 34 kilometers northwest of the city of Cartago, and the epicenter was at a depth of 115 kilometers.
The mayor of Cali, Alejandro Eder, said that at least 20 buildings collapsed in that city as a result of the earthquake.

There were injured and more damage in the east of the country, in the province of Choco.
"We are concerned about additional tremors. Although the epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar, there are injuries and significant damage to buildings in the provincial capital of Kibdu. We are already assessing the damage and will soon publish the first official report," Choco Nubia provincial head Carolina Cordoba-Kuri announced on IX.
The earthquake was also felt in Venezuela and Panama.
