The European Union has offered Ukraine his agreement on critical minerals, immediately after the US president Donald tramp said that Washington is close to signing an agreement with Kiev on the rights to Ukraine's vast natural resources.
European Commissioner for Industrial Strategy Stefan Sejurne said that he presented the proposal to Ukrainian officials during the EU leader's visit to Kyiv, marking the third anniversary of the Russian invasion.
"Of the 30 critical minerals that Europe needs, 21 could be provided by Ukraine in a win-win partnership," Sejourne said, adding that the added value of Europe's offer is that it will never require an agreement that is not mutually beneficial, reports Politiko.
"Financial Times": Ukraine agreed to an agreement with the USA
On the other hand, "Financial Times" writes that Ukraine has agreed to an agreement with the United States on the joint development of mineral resources in connection with the change in Washington's demands.
"Ukrainian officials say Kiev is now ready to sign an agreement to jointly develop its mineral resources, including oil and gas, after the United States dropped its claim to $500 billion in potential production revenue," the paper said.
According to the paper, representatives of Ukraine managed to negotiate more favorable terms with the United States. The final version of the project included a clause requiring Kyiv to contribute 50 percent of the joint development revenue to a fund that would be invested in Ukrainian projects.
Volodymyr Zelensky could soon visit Washington to meet with US President Donald Trump at the signing ceremony of an agreement on joint development of mineral resources.
"This will be an opportunity for the president to discuss a major investment." And after that we can think about the next steps," said one Ukrainian official.
Before that, the "Financial Times" reported that the Ukrainian leader was "very angry" at a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant when he discussed the rare earth deal, and that there was a conflict between the parties. It was specified that Zelensky rejected Besent's claim that partnership with the US in the field of mineral extraction would strengthen Ukraine's security. On the same day, Trump said that he would demand from Ukraine not only rare earth minerals, but also oil, as well as "everything he can get." He said that the EU has the ability to return the money, while the US does not.
Ukraine has vast deposits of critical metals and minerals, from lithium to titanium, which are vital to the production of modern technologies and are highly desirable in the global race for resources.
In addition, it also has huge reserves of coal, oil, gas and uranium, but now a large part of it is located in the territories under Russian control.
