The European Commission proposed the adoption of the 19th package to the member states of the Union sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine, especially on Russian energy sources, said Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Lajen announced on Tuesday "additional measures" by the EU against Russia, aimed especially at its energy sector, cryptocurrencies, and banks, after a conversation with US President Donald Trump, the AFP agency recalled.
Trump asked allies to stop buying Russian oil before he takes punitive measures against Moscow and to introduce tariffs to China because it buys fuel from Russia.
The EU has already banned the majority of Russian oil imports and reduced the share it imports from Russia from 29 percent at the beginning of 2021 to two percent by mid-2025, the AP agency writes.
"Russia's war economy, supported by fossil fuel revenues, is financing the bloodshed in Ukraine. To end it, the Commission will propose accelerating the phasing out of Russian fossil fuel imports," Von der Leyen wrote.
