United States launched a new round of airstrikes against Iran, and Tehran retaliated with strikes aimed at Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
The Associated Press reports that the US attack appears to have been more intense than yesterday, but Iran has not released information on what was hit.
Iran has closed passage through the Strait of Hormuz to all ships after a massive US attack on targets in the country, the central headquarters of Iran's military said.
"Due to the unstable situation in the region, the Strait of Hormuz is closed to the movement of any vessels, including oil tankers and merchant ships, and any movement will be restricted," the armed forces said in a statement, according to the Iranian agency.
US Central Command said the latest round of airstrikes ended at dawn.
The military command said the strikes were "a response to Iran's unwarranted and continued aggression" and targeted "Iranian military surveillance capabilities, communications systems and air defense sites."
Explosions were heard around Tehran, as well as in the port city of Bandar Abbas and other southern areas along the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran responded to the attacks by launching strikes against Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
Kuwait has closed its airspace. Jordan has not confirmed the attacks, although the US embassy in Amman issued a warning. Warning sirens sounded in Bahrain.
The new US attack on several Iranian cities comes at a time when efforts to negotiate an end to the war appear blocked again, and Iran insists it will retain control of the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump has warned that Tehran will "pay the price" for stalling negotiations.
