There is still no word about Bitef and Fest. this year's 59. Bitef should, according to the announcement, start in fifteen days, a 53st feast in less than a month and a half.
59. Bitef
The session of the Bitef Board, from which some kind of decision was expected, should have been held last week, but - it was not. According to information from the directorate of the Bitef theater, within which the Bitef festival operates, the next one has not been scheduled to date.
The last official information was, and he said it two weeks ago to "Vremen" Svetozar Cvetković, Chairman of the Board in his resignation, that everything will be done so that this year there will still be Bitef. No one from Bitef wants to say how far it has come, and how it is being done in an abnormally short period of time with the same budget (20 million dinars), without the Artistic Directorate and with three members of the Board resigning.
53st feast
The members of the Fest Committee are in the phase of agreeing to meet and discuss, and possibly make a decision on the date: whether it is the end of December or February of next year, when it is normally scheduled.
Apparently, the program for the December term exists. It was made within the budget of 20 million dinars (both festivals received the same amount), which means that it is not "festival" lavish, but it is certainly enough to hold a festival based on it.
The proposal for the February issue is based on the expectation that by then somehow more money will be accumulated, that is, that the current 20 million dinars will be combined with the same amount from next year, so it could be easier to breathe.
However, no one can guarantee that the City Assembly will have that money by February. This means that there is no reason why the Fest should not be already in December.
There is, therefore, a real possibility that the Fest will be skipped this year. Even the idea of a biennial Fest was thrown on the table. The Board should decide on all that.
Time is running out.
Representatives of Bitef and Fest discussed everything with Jelena Medaković, the new secretary of culture of the City. They were satisfied with the conversation, but they did not come to a conclusion.
It is not clear why both Bitef and Fest, the biggest and most important international festivals of the capital and the country, are so silent. It seems that they are looking for the most painless way to announce that they won't be there this year, but without saying the reason why they won't be there, for example, not saying that the City doesn't have the money for them. And especially not to say why there is no money and where it went.
It seems like they are waiting for time to run out for them.
