Alexander Vulin in the previous two years, he held the position of Minister of Internal Affairs, which was replaced by the previous head of the BIA Bratislav Gasic, so that these two officials, specially trusted by Aleksandar Vučić, simply performed a cast.
His appointment to head the BIA has multiple political messages.
Considering the way he treats political dissidents, who for him have always been "foreign agents" and "enemies of Serbia", it can certainly be expected that the BIA, under Vulin, would destroy "points of rebellion" in society with even more enthusiasm and energy. . It has all possible mechanisms and tools for this: unlike intelligence agencies in democratic countries, the BIA has many powers of the public police, wrote Nedim Sejdinović in the text entitled Vulin at the head of the BIA: Service for the destruction of opposition and critical thought.
In addition, writes Sejdinović, in recent years the agency has invested in state-of-the-art, powerful software for controlling modern communications, so it should be expected that they will be used with the aim of creating a digital autocracy. Social networks, as a place of activism, will be even more tightly controlled. In the service itself, unlike in the nineties, there are no signs of "professional resistance". It is the result of a progressive personnel invasion, but also of a political doctrine that says that anyone who keeps quiet and does his job in accordance with expectations should be thoroughly corrupted.
In recent years, the BIA has shown that it is active in neighboring countries as a kind of destructive element, as evidenced by a series of discovered scandals. Sometimes, admittedly, its activities are exaggerated in the region and used for internal political purposes, but one should not ignore the possibility that the BIA can be put much more actively in the service of realizing the insane idea of the "Serbian world", of which Aleksandar Vulin is the biggest advocate. Of course, he won't be able to do that without Vučić's baffling, but all those who thought that Vučić really renounced his policy from the nineties, which was only modernized during his rule, were mistaken so many times.
As for the international aspect, it is clear that the appointment of Vulin as the head of the BIA is a concession to Russia, writes Sejdinović. Vulin not only does not hide them, but boasts of unusually good relations with official Moscow. Moscow treats him like its own child.
