Final negotiations between the Republic of Ghana and Serbia on the conclusion of mobility are underway workforce. Translated into plain language: bureaucratic obstacles are being removed for young people from Ghana to work legally in Serbia, where 100.000 visas are planned to be issued this year work permits for foreigners.
During the official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia Marko Đurić to Accra, at a press conference with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Samuel Okudzet Ablakava, the cooperation between Serbia and Ghana in this matter was announced, writes the Ghana News Agency.
Serbia faces an aging population and an increasing need for additional labor, while Ghana, on the other hand, has a young and unemployed population, officials of the West African republic explained.
The average age in Ghana is 21,1 years, while in Serbia the figure is 44,9, compared to the global average of 30,5 years.
Ghana has about 34 million inhabitants, and the country's biggest problem is still poverty, especially in rural areas, where almost two-thirds of people do not have access to basic services such as education and health.
Ghana's economy is facing serious challenges - in addition to high inflation, public debt exceeds 80 percent of GDP.
Although economic growth has slowed, Ghana is benefiting from exports of gold, oil and cocoa.
It is believed that through regulated mechanisms, the young population of Ghana could find work in various sectors of the Serbian economy, primarily in construction, healthcare, agriculture, service activities, and the IT sector.
Labor mobility agreements
Serbia plans to offer scholarships to Ghanaian students through the "World in Serbia" program, which would further strengthen cooperation in education.
If the labor mobility agreement is concluded, Ghana will become the second African country, after Egypt, to have this type of bilateral agreement with Serbia.
In June 2025, the Minister of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Milica Đurđević Stamenovski discussed in Cairo with the Minister of Labor of the Arab Republic of Egypt Mohamed Gobran about the improvement of cooperation between the two countries in the areas of social policy, labor migration and worker protection, the Ministry announced on its website.
At the meeting, specific models of cooperation and the inclusion of Egyptian workers in sectors of priority importance for the further economic development of Serbia were discussed, taking into account the legal framework and the needs of the Serbian labor market.
"Africa is the continent of the future and we want Serbia to be present on that continent in the fields of agriculture, infrastructure, construction and social policy. We are creating new bridges of our common friendship for the future of generations to come," the minister said.
Mass departure of young people from Serbia
The opposition party Serbia Center (SRCE) reminded in June of this year that, according to the data of the Republic Institute of Statistics, around 27.000 mostly young, educated people leave Serbia every year, writes Beta.
"The statistics are inexorable, most of them are young, educated people. It is particularly worrying that the reasons for their departure are not economic, but security, perspective, respect for personality, work and their knowledge," the party explained.
They indicated that from 2015 to 2024, during the rule of the Serbian Progressive Party, based on natural increase, the number of inhabitants decreased by 437.205.
Opposition parties warn every now and then that the poor health system, the ever-lower living standards, the suppression of basic freedoms and human rights, and massive corruption are leading Serbia to an alarming decrease in the number of its population.
