Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky warned of the accelerated development of weapons, but also assessed that international institutions are insufficiently effective and that there is none that could stop the bloodshed.
"What can Sudan or Somalia or Palestine or any other people living in war really expect from UN or global system? For decades - only announcements and announcements. And even everything that is happening in Gaza remains without a solution," said Zelensky, who began his speech at the UN General Assembly with a renewed appeal for more military aid to Ukraine.
Referring to NATO, Zelensky said that even membership in such a long-standing military alliance does not automatically mean that security is ensured, reports Reuters.
Convinced that Ukraine is "only the first" to be attacked by Russia, Zelensky said that "Russian drones are already flying all over Europe" and that "Russian operations have spread" to other countries.
"Recently, Russian drones violated Polish airspace and only four were shot down," Zelensky said.
"Nobody in Europe is safe from Russia"
Russian President Vladimir Putin, as he added, wants to continue the war against Ukraine by expanding it to others, which is why he believes that "no one can feel safe right now."
Zelensky pointed out that on Tuesday he had a good meeting with US President Donald Trump and that he talked in New York with many other leaders, based on which he is convinced that a lot can change.
"Of course, we are doing everything we can to ensure that Europe really helps, and of course we count on the United States as well. I appreciate the help we get. Yes, a lot of it is envied by the Group of 7 and the Group of 20. But in the end, peace depends on all of us, on the United Nations. Therefore, do not remain silent while Russia continues to drag out this war. Please speak out and condemn it," Zelensky said.
Drones are a huge danger
Presenting a grim picture of how drones threaten national security, Zelensky said military technology no longer cares about geography, but is now reshaping it.
"Recently, airports in Europe had to be closed because of drones," he said, referring to the incident at Copenhagen airport.
"The authorities cannot even say which drones are in question, nor who sent them and from where," said Zelenski, assessing that the situation in this regard will only worsen.
According to him, companies are already working on drones that can shoot down other drones.
"It is only a matter of time when drones will not only shoot down each other, but will attack critical infrastructure and target people by themselves, completely autonomously and without the participation of humans, except for a few that control artificial intelligence systems," said Zelensky, indicating that drones play an important role in Ukraine's defense in the war with Russia.
Based on the Ukrainian experience, Zelensky said that today no one can guarantee anyone's security, except for strong alliances.
"Only strong partners and only your own weapons... If you want peace, you still have to work on weapons," said Zelensky, assessing that "weapons decide who will survive."
Zelensky told officials at the UN General Assembly that they are well aware that international law does not fully function if you do not have powerful friends who are truly willing to stand by you.
"Even that doesn't work without weapons," added Zelensky.
