A team from a town with only 7.000 inhabitants wrote history and placed in the first BundesligaIt's time to meet football club Elfersberg.
Elfersberg is a small town northeast of Zaarbrücken. It is part of the municipality of Spizen-Elfersberg, which has about 13.000 inhabitants, while Elfersberg itself has only about 7.000 people. There is no train station in the town, and there are only three bakeries, he reports Deutsche says.
How long has the club been around?
The club was founded in 1907. It was temporarily shut down during the First World War, so it was re-established in 1918.
In 2013, the club reached the third division together with Leipzig, but was immediately relegated. After two lost playoffs, in 2016 and 2017, a return to the third rank followed in 2022. After that, the club gained an increasing reputation in Germany and recorded a sudden rise.
This coincided with the arrival of Nils-Ole Bock in 2017, and a year later coach Horst Steffen, a former Bundesliga player. Bok first worked as a scout, and then as a sports director. He played a key role in recruiting players. With the team, Steffen achieved two consecutive placements in a higher rank, so the club reached the second Bundesliga in 2023.
The German national team striker Nick Waltemade (currently a Newcastle player) played an important role on that path, while the Bayern player Paul Wanner played a very successful loan a year later.
How did they get to the Bundesliga?
Already in the second season in the second league, Elfersberg played a barrage to enter the Bundesliga, but with a dramatic goal by Heidenheim in the 95th minute, it fell short. After that, the club was also left without coach Steffen (Werder Bremen), several key players left (eg Fisnik Aslani who returned to Hoffenheim) and a fight for survival in the second tier of German club football seemed to follow.
Nevertheless, continuity in management proved to be crucial. The club is run by Frank Holzer, chairman of the supervisory board, and his son Dominic, who is the club president. They are also the duo at the head of the company "Ursafarm", which is the main sponsor of the club.
The arrival of coach Vincent Wagner from Hoffenheim's second team turned out to be a complete hit - he kept the existing system and upgraded it. Assistant coach Mike Franz, a former Bundesliga player, as well as team manager Selina Wagner, winner of the Champions League with Wolfsburg, played an important role in the coaching staff.
Despite the departure of key people - forward Younes Ebnutalib (Eintracht Frankfurt) and sports director Bok (Borussia Dortmund) - the team has maintained stability. After the defeat in the penultimate round, the situation became more complicated, but thanks to a better goal difference, the victory in the last round was enough for second place - and for a historic entry into the Bundesliga.
"A friend told me: 'If Elfersberg gets into the Bundesliga, it's like going to the moon.' "Today we landed on the moon," Wagner said.
Elfersberg plays its matches at the Waldstadion an der Kaiserlinde, which holds 10.000 spectators - more than the city itself has inhabitants. Work on expanding the capacity to 15.000 seats, as required by the Bundesliga, should be completed by 2027.
Who are the key players?
Bambasa Conte's midfielder, on loan from Hoffenheim, was one of the key players in the fight for promotion to the elite ranks. Goalkeeper Nikolas Kristof had an excellent season, as did winger Lukas Petkov with 13 goals and seven assists. Attacker David Mokwa, brought in January for one and a half million euros, further strengthened the team.
The average age of the team is 25,3 years, which makes it one of the youngest in the 2nd Bundesliga. The club reportedly earned about 10 million euros from transfers, and spent only three million on reinforcements. It clearly shows the strategy of rational business.
This summer, we will see how the club will "put together" a team capable of surviving in the Bundesliga.
