Not wanting Iran to overshadow the visit, Trump postponed his planned trip to China in March in order to gain time for the situation to calm down, i.e. from his point of view, to force Tehran to capitulate. Months later, however, the peace agreement has still not been reached, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues, which has major consequences for China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil.
The meeting between the two leaders comes just a few days after the Iranian foreign minister arrived in Beijing. This visit is the first visit by a US president to China since Trump's last trip in 2017.
