The Moscow East Media Group (IMG) has become the owner of 50 percent of the shares in the company Politika Novine i Magazini, which was previously held by the media group Westdeutsche Algemeine Zeitung (VAC), which announced two years ago that it would withdraw from Southeast Europe.
On the Serbian media market, the media group VAC has been active in the newspaper "Politika" since October 2001, when it entered into a joint venture with the newspaper and publishing house Politika AD, and then formed the company Politika novine i magazini. In addition to "Politics", that company also publishes "Sportski journal".
According to the records of the Agency for Business Registers from July 17, 2012, Politika - a joint-stock company for newspaper publishing and graphic activity has 50 percent ownership in the company Politika NM with 24.000.000 euros of registered non-monetary capital and 15.000.000 euros of registered monetary capital. The other 50 percent is owned by OOO Ist Media Group from the Russian Federation, after Ost Holding GMBH, Tuchlauben 17, Vienna, was deleted from the Register and Ist Media Group was entered.
The largest shareholders in the company Politika - a joint-stock company for newspaper publishing and graphic activity are: Republic of Serbia, Equity Fund of the Republic of Serbia, EPS, PIO Fund of the Republic of Serbia, Komercijalna banka, Dipos, and small shareholders own about 21 percent.
Several media reported the statement of Acting General Director Zeferin Graci that Politika AD was not informed about the transaction between VAC and IMG.
Details about the Russian company are not known at the time of writing. There is a limited liability company Ist Media Group in Moscow, which is located at 9 Arkhangelsky Pereulok, floor 1, office 6. Arkhangelsky Pereulok is an alley in the center of Moscow, a few hundred meters away from Lyubyanka Square.
On January 12, 2012, Uroลก Stefanoviฤ was registered as the general director of IMG.
The Serbian Progressive Party, the United Regions of Serbia and the Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) reacted to the news about the change in the ownership structure of Politika.
The Serbian Progressive Party announced that it is "scandalous and shameful" that the oldest news outlet Politika changed owners overnight, without anyone's knowledge, in a non-transparent manner, which the party qualifies as "another attempt by the Democratic Party to stifle media freedom." SNS asks whether Miroslav Bogiฤeviฤ and Duลกan Petroviฤ or perhaps Boลพidar ฤeliฤ are behind that behind-the-scenes action, as well as whether DS thinks that all newspapers in Serbia should be its party newsletter. The Association of Journalists of Serbia expresses its astonishment at the knowledge that "our oldest daily Politika, secretly and overnight, changed its owner..." The UNS statement claims that the wealthy businessman Miroslav Bogiฤeviฤ, one of the financiers of the Democratic Party, is connected to Ist Media Group.
The United Regions of Serbia also raised the question in a statement: "Who are the new owners of Politika and is it true that they are the vice-president of the DS Duลกan Petroviฤ and persons connected with him, the tycoon and one of the financiers of the DS Miroslav Bogiฤeviฤ and his associate Uroลก Stefanoviฤ, who is the director of the Moscow company Ist Media Group?"
Miroslav Bogiฤeviฤ, a native of ล abac, is the owner of the MB Farmakom concern, which includes, among other things, the ล abac Dairy and the Sombor Battery Factory.
The Association of Serbian Journalists also demands that the former Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkoviฤ, Minister of Culture Predrag Markoviฤ and Mandate Ivica Daฤiฤ urgently answer whether they have determined who is the ultimate owner of Ist Media Group and where the money for this purchase comes from. The following are questions from the UNS about whether the Directorate for the Prevention of Money Laundering checked the origin of the capital, who provided cover for the loan with which Politika was purchased, whether it is true that it is a transaction worth more than ten million euros, what is the reason that the new owner of the Policy in the Agency for Business Registers (APR) will be registered on the same day when the request was submitted, as well as whether it is true that the lawyer of East Media Group is the former deputy director of the APR...
The Democratic Party vigorously denies any involvement in the transaction, and DS Vice President Duลกan Petroviฤ declares that the accusations against him are not worth commenting on.
