The beach of Sikia on Sithonia in Halkidiki was the scene of a dramatic event this summer, which showed that the waves do not forgive inattention. How is it Courier reported, a "developer from Nis" saved three people from a "wild" sea.
Just a few days earlier, on the beach in nearby Sarti, a fifty-six-year-old Serbian citizen lost his life trying, according to unofficial information, to help a man who was being dragged away from the shore by a strong sea current.
Grčka is also one of this summer's most visited destinations Serbian tourists. However, some beaches are known for strong currents and waves that can surprise even good swimmers.
That's why we have singled out the beaches in Greece where bathers should be especially careful.
Which beaches are dangerous in Greece and why?
Sarti is one of the most popular places in Sithonia, but it has a beach with an unpredictable sea. The waves here can be very strong, and the sea current can easily drag swimmers to the depths. Special caution is advised because families with children spend their summer there. Lifeguards appeal to swimmers not to enter the water when the red flags are displayed.
Posidi rt Beach, located on Kassandra, has claimed several lives in recent years. Due to the tides, its shape is constantly changing. Parts of the beach often "sink" into the sea and are not visible and then later "emerge" differently, which makes it one of the most dangerous beaches in Halkidiki. If you still want to swim here, don't go too far from the shore. For years, local lifeguards have been appealing to tourists not to swim at the very tip of the beach, due to strong sea currents.
Back currents and slippery rocks
And Myrtos beach on Kefalonia, although one of the most famous beaches in the country, requires caution. The biggest danger here are the so-called back currents. The water becomes deep already after a few meters from the shore, and the water that hits the shore returns to the open sea at a high speed. On Mirtos, it is recommended to swim only along the coast when the waves are big.
On the island of Thassos, Paradise Beach is also known for strong currents, so visitors are advised not to stray too far from the shore.
Sarakiniko beach is located in the vicinity of Parga. The white volcanic stones become very slippery when wet, so if you are knocked down by the waves and end up in the sea, it is difficult to get back to shore.
On Navagio beach on Zakynthos, where a photogenic shipwreck is located, a part of the coast collapsed a few years ago. Several visitors were injured then, and the beach was closed after this accident. Cliffs can be dangerous on some beaches on Lefkada and Corfu.
Doctors also remind that one of the most common causes of death are heart problems, often caused by sudden entry into cold water after staying at a high temperature, and gradual entry into the sea is also advised.
