Bosnia and Herzegovina did everything in their power to reach the round of 16 of the World Cup. They defeated Qatar and with four points they have a great chance to advance.
Sergej Barbarez's men were a more dangerous opponent from the very beginning of the match and created several good chances already in the opening minutes. First, Ermedin Demirović threatened with a shot from the edge of the penalty area, and not long after, Ivan Šunjić forced goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada to make an excellent intervention.
The team from Bosnia and Herzegovina continued with the initiative, and Ivan Bašić shot just over the crossbar in the 17th minute. After a break for refreshments due to high temperatures, the home team continued their attacks, and Aljbegović hit the living wall from a free kick.
The supremacy on the field was finally crowned in the 29th minute. Aljbegović accepted the ball on the edge of the penalty area, broke free from the keeper and hit the crossbar with a powerful shot for a 1:0 lead.
Just five minutes later, Bosnia and Herzegovina doubled their advantage. After a dangerous action and pressure in front of the Qatar goal, there was a misunderstanding in the defense, and the goalkeeper Abunada unfortunately sent the ball into his own net for 2:0.
By the end of the first half, opportunities were seen on both sides. Edin Dzeko hit the post in the 39th minute and missed the chance to practically decide the winner, and Qatar punished that mistake in the 42nd minute. Edmilson Junior did an excellent job of Hasan Al Hajdos, who hit an empty net from a few meters away and reduced the score to 2:1.
The guests could have equalized at the end of the first part of the game, but Pedro Miguel hit the post in stoppage time.
Mahmic confirms victory
In the continuation, Qatar had slightly more possession of the ball and tried to equalize. The best opportunity was missed by Akram Afif in the 57th minute when, after a cross, he shot wide of the goal from a good position.
The coach of Bosnia and Herzegovina refreshed the team with changes, and one of the reserves, Ermin Mahmić, played a significant role in the end of the match.
Qatar continued to press, but failed to seriously threaten Nikola Vasilja, while on the other hand, Bosnia and Herzegovina patiently waited for an opportunity to counterattack.
The key moment happened in the 80th minute. After a crowd in the penalty area, the ball bounced to Ermin Mahmić, who was left alone in the penalty area and routinely sent it into the net for the final 3:1.
Until the end of the match, Qatar tried to alleviate the defeat, had several interruptions and shots from a distance, but the defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina successfully resisted all attacks.
Bosnia and Herzegovina deservedly reached the victory after better play during most of the game, while Qatar, despite having more possession of the ball in the second half, was left without a concrete finish and an opportunity to avoid defeat.
