During Patricia Hearst's trial, which began on February 4, 1976 (two years after the kidnapping, three months after her arrest) in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, defense attorneys tried to prove that, like the POWs in Korea, Patricia was a victim of brainwashing; the jury sentenced her to 35 years in prison, which was later reduced to seven years, and after serving only twenty-two months she was pardoned and then erased by amnesty
