In Serbia, only ten people decide to go on the road each year medical transition that includes hormone therapy at University Clinical Center of Serbia (UKCS). Many others either suffer in the "wrong" body or take hormones on their own, often illegally.
Three of those who took the official route now claim that in the period before the covid pandemic, they had to participate in the alleged "research" of Svetlana Vujović, head of the Clinic for Endocrinology UKCS and professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade. Vujović is also the president of the Republican Expert Commission for transgender conditions.
"Vreme" writes about this in the new double issue, which is on newsstands from Thursday (April 9).
Money in an envelope?
Three "Vremena" sources say that during the process, they were placed to sleep with the apparatus on their bodies in an alleged office that resembles a private apartment - in Molerova Street, near the St. Sava Temple. They claim that Dr. Vujović's staff asked them to transfer money in an envelope for the nurse who is on duty at that office at night.
Vreme heard the same from other transgender people, but they did not agree to speak to the media.
"Maybe it's a private practice, I'm not sure what it's used for, since there was also a room with some medical equipment," one interlocutor tells us. The photo, which has been changed for his protection, shows him that evening with a device on his body in the mentioned "clinic". "Vreme" is now publishing this photo for the first time.
One expert interlocutor, who was shown the photo, says that it is the Alice PDX device from the Philips company, and a comparison of the photos shows the same. This device monitors sleep apnea, and it is also distributed in Belgrade.
However, all "Vremen" sources claim that they never had problems sleeping and that they heard how they were exposed to the examination because Dr. Vujović needed it for the research she was working on. They say that they never got the results of that analysis, unlike all the other reviews they did.
Although Svetlana Vujović often deals with transgender people in her research, so far none has been published that included the monitoring of breathing disorders in sleep. However, in 2021, Vujović was one of the authors of a study in which sleep breathing was monitored in subjects who were not transgender.
Vujović denies.
When the journalist talked to Dr. Vujović about this topic, she claimed that the purpose of spending the night with the device was to measure blood pressure. Vujović also claimed that all the findings are in the medical records. She denied giving anyone the money in the envelope.
Vujović has been dealing with transgender people since 1989, as one of the pioneers in that field in Serbia.
She was on the electoral list of the Serbian Progressive Party for the Belgrade elections in 2023, participated in the campaign and spoke at a rally in the Belgrade Arena. Then she thanked President Aleksandar Vučić for "all those born and the babies yet to be born", referring to the demographic policy.
