Three years after mass murder in the village Dubona near Mladenovac, where he lost his son and daughter, Saša Panić says that "nothing has changed" and that the institutions have not taken responsibility for the failures that, according to him, preceded the tragedy.
"We did not move from that point, we stayed on May 3 and 4. Nothing new happened, no one took concrete steps, nor was there an initiative to change the law," Panić told the FoNet agency.
He pointed out that the families of the victims have been trying to point out systemic failures and errors in the work of the institutions through appeals for three years.
He claims that the perpetrator Uroš Blažić showed signs of violent behavior even before the crime, as well as that several reports were filed against him which, according to his knowledge, were not adequately processed.
"If it had been reacted on time, perhaps the tragedy could have been prevented," said the father of the victims Milan and Kristina, calling on the authorities to review the work of the institutions.
Panić also pointed to, as he claims, possible failures in the work of the police, the prosecution, the army and the center for social work, stressing that no one has been held responsible so far.
Full responsibility for adults
Speaking about the criminal policy, Panić believes that it is necessary to change the legal framework, especially in the part that refers to the criminal responsibility of young adults.
According to the Criminal Code, since the defendant Uroš was not yet 21 years old when the crime was committed, he cannot be sentenced to life imprisonment.
"When someone turns 18, they must bear full responsibility for their actions, regardless of the age categories recognized by law," he stated.
He added that, despite numerous public appearances and appeals by the victims' families, he did not notice the political will to solve the systemic problems.
"I have the impression that the attitude of 'it's not my child' still prevails, and that's why there is no reaction," said Panić, adding that he is afraid that Blažić might repeat the crime and cause a similar accident after he is released from prison.
