The Center for Local Self-Government (CLS) announced on Monday that the largest consortium of private carriers, "BG bus transport", consisting of 18 carriers, threatened the leadership of the City of Belgrade that they will soon suspend the passenger transportation service, unless outstanding debts of 3,9 billion dinars are paid.
The Center stated in a statement that it has a letter sent to the Secretariat for Public Transport and the Mayor's Office, in which the transport operators confirm that they have not been paid anything for four months and that there are no longer any basic prerequisites to continue working in Belgrade.
"The situation is alarming, especially considering that the largest suppliers of GSP also warned the management of the City and that company that they will no longer be able to service vehicles, unless their previous debts are also regulated," stated CLS.
The director of CLS, Nikola Jovanović, points out that the "sole culprit" for the critical situation in public transport, but also in the city's public finances, is Mayor Aleksandar Šapić, which will lead Belgrade to bankruptcy.
