African swine fever has affected a large number of municipalities and districts in Serbia, which is why around 18.000 pigs were euthanized by the end of last week.
Veterinarian and secretary of the Livestock Association of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, Nenad Budimović said for RTS that there were problems in pork production even before the appearance of African swine fever.
As he stated, we entered the year 2023 with some 2.670.000 pigs, which is over 200.000 less than in 2022.
"We didn't need this, it will certainly be a tough fight to maintain the production of pigs and pork, and we also see that big changes are happening in Europe - the number of sows has decreased by some 500.000 in just one year." The price of pork has increased and is now about 3,3 euros per kilogram, while it was 2,3 euros," notes Budimović.
He says that a period is coming when the question is what will happen with the price and the number of pigs.
When asked when the price increase could spill over to Serbia, Budimović says that we do not produce enough pork for our own needs, and that we meet the needs of around 87 percent of the market's demands.
"We need the rest for processing and we buy in the EU." It is difficult now to give a projection and tell people that you are engaged in pig breeding, and the disease is expanding. We have to wait and see how everything will go not only in Serbia, but also in Europe," adds Budimović.
