The Serbian Parliament adopted the amendments on Thursday (March 6). of the Law on Higher Education. These changes envisage a 50 percent reduction in tuition fees paid by self-financing students at higher education institutions founded by the Republic.
163 MPs voted for the amendments to that law, and two MPs did not vote, reports FoNet.
After the adoption of the law in principle, the deputies applauded, and the President of the Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, said that "this was the most difficult law ever passed."
"Despite the tear gas, despite the shock bombs, smoke bombs, fire extinguishers, despite the terrorist attacks, we managed to fulfill the fourth student demand," said Brnabić.
She expressed her hope that students will now return to classes and that 230.000 families in Serbia will be satisfied and that, as she said, "we will continue to fight for a stable, prosperous Serbia."
What do the amendments to the Law foresee?
Amendments to the Law on Higher Education increase the budget for higher education by 20 percent.
Additional funds in the amount of 5,7 billion dinars have been provided to increase the salaries of employees in higher education, from the salary for March this year.
The basis for salaries in higher education will be equalized with the salary bases of employees at other levels of education from January 1, 2026.
Amendments to the Law on Higher Education also foresee norms aimed at further improving the quality and relevance of higher education, university autonomy and further internationalization of higher education.
