Suada Husejnović-Kikanović from Tuzla struggled for years with a serious illness, chronic kidney disease, and recently announced that she was discharged from the hospital at the worst time.
The girl was more than 20 years old dialysis and she had to go to the hospital several times a week. This type of hemodialysis means that the patient is attached to a special machine every two or three days, for half the day, so it is very exhausting and life-threatening.
Although she was on the waiting list for transplantation kidneys, she did not receive the call, in which the doctors would tell her that an organ suitable for her had been found. Suada took her own life on May 26, and in one of her last posts on social networks, she announced that she was discharged from the hospital just when, as she stated, she needed support the most.
"In the worst period of my life, unfortunately when I needed the most understanding from the medical staff from our Dr., M.Sc., Fr., doctors, I was discharged from the hospital by myself. Waiting for appointments Heart," she wrote and added that she was running out of strength because of waiting 21 years for a transplant.
Eight out of 3.000
Between 8 and 20 kidney transplants are performed annually in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the number of hemodialysis patients is around 3.000, and 10 percent of them are on the transplant waiting list. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not a member of Eurotransplant, which means that it cannot cooperate with other EU countries in this matter. A large number of patients are not on the list because of the complicated procedures they have to complete, and because the system does not care about them, which is why they cannot fulfill the requirements.
For the sake of comparison, in 2023, 136 cadaveric transplants were performed in Croatia, which is organ donation from a patient who has been diagnosed with brain death. This is exactly the kind of organ Suada was waiting for.
An additional problem is that transplant laws, as well as by-laws, are applied in this country depending on the entity, so parts of the country practically do not cooperate with each other, which further complicates any possibility for the patient to receive an organ. The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina only adopted a law in 2024 according to which organ transplantation can be performed between people who are not relatives.
Also, during the corona virus, transplants were not done at all, and there was a lull in the later period as well.
