Spanish police and customs announced that they seized 9,5 tons of cocaine, hidden in containers of bananas from Ecuador.
The drug was found in the port of Algeciras, in a shipment that was supposed to contain 1.080 boxes of bananas, reports AP.
As the newspaper "El Mundo" writes, this is the largest amount of seized drugs in the history of Spain.
Before this seizure, the largest shipment of cocaine seized in Spain was 8,4 tons, in 2018, also among bananas, in the same port.
"This operation was an unprecedented blow to one of the world's largest criminal organizations in the distribution of cocaine, which targeted major criminal networks in Europe," the statement said, according to Reuters.
The so-called "Nano" operation, which began in July, continues, the police said. Although it was stated that no one has yet been arrested in connection with this seizure, it is not excluded that it will happen in the following days.
The cocaine was in a container from Ecuador, which, according to the official declaration, was transporting 1.080 boxes of bananas. However, about 15 kilograms of drugs were hidden on each of them.
The final destination was a Portuguese port, although the drugs were to be distributed in different parts of the old continent, mainly in Central Europe.
The boxes were marked with more than 30 different logos corresponding to various European crime rings to which the cocaine was supposed to go, but Spanish police have not publicly named which rings or organizations. However, Spain's El Mundo writes that the police dealt a heavy blow to the Balkan Cartel.
