Ilija Srdanović, cardiologist and professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad, with the latest changes, came out on top of the Student List, which was submitted to the Republican Election Commission on Monday (September 14).
As "Vreme" previously wrote, when a narrow majority of the plenum decided to drop Belgrade Rector Vladan Djokić, who was predicted to be in first place, from the list, the students were looking for a new "first among equals". The choice fell on Srdanović.
What he said at the student assembly
At the recent student gathering in Novi Sad, when he was presented as a candidate, Srdanović recalled that for almost two years, an answer to the unprecedented tragedy had been sought.
"Is there justice in Serbia? Have the culprits been punished? Have the institutions reacted? The students asked, they asked for a reaction from the institutions, and what did they get? The answer from the state was 'no, there are no culprits'. They will not find the culprits, and do you know why? Because they are the most responsible and the biggest culprits. Because they brought corruption to such a level that it kills," he said.
Srdanović added that citizens are looking for a way out "from our youth", which should make the country better. "They've already made it better, walking across the country with blistered, bloody feet."
Srdanović spoke for the first time at student gatherings in Belgrade at Slavia in May of this year.
"I love the country"
He supported the student protests from the very beginning. In April of last year, he said in the show "If I was someone":
"Students expect concrete support, that you stand by them. Not only students. And this nation, these people here, from me, as a doctor, expect support that I will support them when it is difficult. The same goes for the students who are now in this situation. To be with them when it is difficult. For you to support them and be the first to strike if someone is going to step on them, so that they are not stepped on."
He talked about how he was brought up. "To be free, to be myself, to respect others. I love others, I love the country, I love the society I belong to. And that I am obliged to return to that society as much as possible what it gave me."
Medical career
Srdanović was born in 1970 in Novi Sad, but he lived and finished elementary school and high school in Vrbas.
In Novi Sad, he graduated, completed his specializations, and defended his doctorate in 2012. He previously obtained his master's degree in Belgrade.
As a specialist in internal medicine, he has been teaching at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad at the department of emergency medicine since 2018, and since last year he has been a full professor.
Since 1997, he has been working at the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases of Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica.
Srdanović was also active within the Medical Chamber of Vojvodina. In June of this year, he was the candidate of "Our Chamber" for the elections within the LKV, however, his opponent Miodrag Stanić won.
