Competition from large markets, as well as new ways of online sales, home delivery, have become a challenge for markets.
"Markets of Serbia" recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. On this occasion, the executive director of the business association Pijaca Srbija Savo Duvnjak said that the turnover at the markets in current prices last year was higher by about 21 percent compared to the year before. However, he adds, this does not mean that turnover has actually increased, because the prices of agricultural products have increased by more than 30 percent in the same period.
Duvnjak also pointed to the aging of market tenants, with an average age of around 57, which makes it difficult for young farmers to attend.
The associations will therefore cooperate with the relevant ministries to provide incentives for producers who sell their products in the markets, especially for those who add value to primary products, such as domestic ajvar, cheese and cured meat products.
Assistant to the Minister of Trade, Žarko Malinović, announced that the work on amending the law on trade is coming to an end with the aim of enabling small producers to sell their products through markets.
Market vendors cannot meet the demand
Although authentic domestic products can only be found on the market, there are not enough of them because a significant number of producers of quality domestic food cannot fully meet the demands of customers.
Some of them are people who are old and no longer have the strength or ambition to increase production, and some of them are producers who find it difficult to adapt to changes.
Duvnjak points out that this is one of the reasons why the Association of Markets of Serbia is looking for a model of how, with the help of competent state authorities, to provide incentives and incentives for domestic food producers who operate in markets.
