Oxford University has named "rizz" as the word of the year for 2023, which is internet slang for romantic attraction or charm and is mainly used by young people, the BBC reports.
It was one of eight shortlisted words, all chosen to reflect the mood, mentality or preoccupations of people in 2023.
The list was narrowed down by public vote, before Oxford lexicographers made a final decision. Other candidates ranged from Swiftie (enthusiastic Taylor Swift fan) do Beige flag (a "beige flag situation" that alerts to a character trait that indicates a partner or potential partner is boring or lacks originality).
Word rizz may not mean anything to you if you're not Gen Z, but it's massively used across the web, with billions of views on the hashtag "rizz" on TikTok. The term is thought to be a shortened form of the word "charisma".
It can also be used as a verb, in expressions such as "to rizz up", which means to attract, seduce or flirt with someone.
