Students from Belgrade and other parts of Serbia went to Niš on foot and by bicycle to attend the protest on Saturday, they were met by many citizens on the plateau in front of the National Theater.
They carry banners, red balloons that say "Love for students" and make noise with whistles. Many of them brought freshly prepared food, sweets and juices for the students.
"Nis is bursting with energy tonight and we are all very excited. The students showed a high level of courage and I think everyone's hearts are full tonight", says Eva, a student from Nis who welcomes her colleagues.
Symbol of courage
"You stand here as a symbol of courage, loyalty and nobility." You are the embodiment of fighters for a just country. Freedom is in justice, you are free here," it says on the gate under which the students arriving in Nis will pass today.
They were welcomed by their colleagues from the University of Niš.
Aleksa is a student at the University of Ljubljana and he came to his hometown to support his colleagues.
"Even though I'm far from home, this is a fight we all have to fight together. When I heard that students were coming to Nis, I just had to come. I am proud of my colleagues and how fighting and brave they are".
Nadica, a student from Nis, says that from today she looks at her city with different eyes.
"I am delighted with how far my colleagues have walked. I can't imagine how difficult it is for them, but in such moments you are driven by a strong desire for a better tomorrow".
Plan for Saturday
The "Student Edict" protest will begin on March 1 at 9.00:2 a.m. and will last until March 03.00 at XNUMX:XNUMX a.m.
The gathering of students and citizens will be at 9.00:XNUMX a.m. at four different points - at the intersection of Ulica Vardarska and Jovan Ristić, near the Cathedral, near the Niteks (Benneton) factory and near the Faculty of Medicine.
After the gathering, the demonstrators will head to the central Trg Kralja Milana, where at 11.52:15 a.m. a fifteen-minute memorial service will be held for the XNUMX people who died when the concrete canopy collapsed at the reconstructed Railway Station in Novi Sad.
