The 50th Fest will not be closed tonight by the great Russian and world director Nikita Mikhalkov, as announced, because the State Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine charged him in absentia on suspicion of threatening the sovereignty of that country.
Jugoslav Pantelić, the artistic director and selector of the Fest for "Vreme" says that "as soon as the war started, it was clear that Mikhalkov would not be able to come, just as other guests could not" and states that, for example, the director Aleksey German junior, got involved via a link to the press conference held on the occasion of his film House arrest. Details regarding the information about the lawsuit against Mikhalkov - he does not know.
Even Ivan Karl, the city secretary for culture, who mediated the planned arrival of Mikhalkov at the Fest, is not aware of this new information related to the great director and says that Mikhalkov will not close this year's festival "for reasons beyond his control".
Both Karl and Pantelić do not want to comment on the aforementioned decision of the court, considering it part of the current atmosphere of persecution of everyone who does not agree with the official Russian or Ukrainian policy, which rules in both warring countries.
The news about Mikhalkov's accusation in absentia was published by Western media, mostly specialized in film, based on information from the FB account of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Irina Venediktova.
On Friday, she published a post in which she addresses Mikhalkov and informs him "that the prosecutor's office has started the procedure to put you on an international wanted list", which can be carried out "whenever you cross the border of almost any country". She proved all that with a photo of the court decision.
Mikhalkov is charged under Article 110 of the Criminal Code on endangering the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, because he said that the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk is the only right way, and that Ukraine and Belarus are "ideal parts of Russia."
"For one reason or another, you stopped acting and started making documentaries about the war," Venediktova told him. "We are aware of your position in the hierarchy of the Russian Federation." I believe that you have close ties with the leaders of the Russian Federation, which is also the reason why you so zealously support this war."
Namely, a few days ago, Nikita Mikhalkov declared war on the stars of the local show business and culture who spoke out against the Russian aggression against Ukraine in his "Besonog" television program.
"I am surprised that Ukrainian prosecutors think that one Russian film director can affect the territorial integrity of the entire country," Mikhalkov commented, according to the Tass agency, and he compared that decision to what Nazi judge Ernst Lautz did in 1939.
Irina Venediktova, also on FB, sent a similar warning to the singer and composer Oleg Gazmanov.
According to the earlier program of Nikita Mikhalkov's stay in Belgrade, he was supposed to hold a ceremonial opening speech at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts tomorrow, as a newly elected member of this institution.
