Ivan Vujačić, a veteran of Serbian politics and diplomacy, once heard an analogy that could well be applied to Serbian foreign policy - he who cannot ride two horses at the same time has nothing to look for in the circus.
As Vujačić tells Vreme, the Serbian era of riding Western and Eastern horses is passing. There is no more space or will for that circus in the West.
"Serbia is trying to ride those two horses, but if we still want to go towards the EU, that type of balancing will no longer be possible. Neither when it comes to Russia, nor when it comes to China, because Europe is also starting to look at China and its expansion differently," says this former Serbian ambassador to the USA.
"And I have to add - Serbia left the European path a long time ago, and this can be seen in many ways," states Vujacic in a major interview for "Vreme", which hits newsstands on Thursday (April 4).
The policy is "pretend and extend"
According to him, in the West, the atmosphere in the media, and congratulations to Putin on his election victory, and all the friendly football matches are very noticeable.
But, still "no one must say so publicly" that Serbia has actually given up on the European path.
"We live in a situation and a policy that I call pretend and extend (we are pretending and procrastinating). This is what Serbia is doing, and what the EU is doing, which has neglected this area, which, in my opinion, is a huge mistake," he says.
"At the same time, there is no political will in Serbia to really move towards the EU, and even worse, such a public opinion is being created that there are now more opponents of that path than there were ten years ago," concludes Vujačić.
