"Twitter will establish a council to moderate content with very diverse views," wrote Elon Musk, and where else but on Twitter. And further: "No major decisions about content or re-establishment of the account can be made before this council meets."
Musk emphasized that Kanye West's account had been reinstated before he officially took over Twitter. The musician's account on Twitter was temporarily canceled due to anti-Semitic statements.
Musk bought Twitter after a long court battle for $44 billion and immediately fired the company's CEO, Parag Agrawal, and several other directors, to whom he will have to pay a $122 million severance package in the name of a "golden parachute".
Critics fear that under Mask, Twitter could drastically liberalize its policy towards controversial content that promotes hate, online mobbing or spreads false information, writes the German "Spiegel".
Musk did not provide any details about the future body that will make the final decisions on content and orders. Facebook concern Meta has for a long time had an expert body that decides on the re-establishment of accounts or the deletion of content. Decisions of this body are binding for the management.
For example, it decided to limit the indefinite blocking of Donald Trump's Facebook account to two years. The reasoning was that Facebook's rules only provide for a time-limited blocking of accounts.
Twitter management, on the other hand, emphasized that once banished from Twitter, they can never return. Musk has announced that he will end such lifetime blocks.
The world's richest man supports radical freedom of speech and has criticized Twitter in the past for restricting freedom of thought. He also announced that he wants to unblock the account of former US President Donald Trump, who was expelled from his favorite social network after attacks by his supporters on the Congress January 6, 2021.
Digital Town Square
"What is the price of freedom?" One possible answer to that question is the $44 billion paid for Twitter by the richest man in the world, Elon Musk. He bought this network announcing that he would enable absolute freedom of speech on it, turn it into a 'digital city square' where everyone will be able to say whatever they want, without fear of punishment or ban. His announcement comes at a very sensitive moment, when the media, which we consider free, strictly filters information related to the war in Ukraine, taking care not to miss anything that would favor the Russian side. Which Moscow's Twitter, allegedly, will not work," wrote "Vreme" in the text Occupation in 280 characters.
It begs the question whether one man can independently make a decision about what freedom of speech is, even if it is a man in whose hands we put our lives by trusting the autopilot of his cars.
