Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenkovic warned of the "harsh political reality" of the Western Balkans, pointing out that "Serbia on the verge of civil war", which is why he emphasized the need for a sober approach to the enlargement of the European Union.
"Serbia is on the verge of civil war," he said in a panel discussion with three prime ministers from Slovenia, Albania and Montenegro at the Bled Strategic Forum.
The topic of the panel was the further expansion of the European Union, and Planković emphasized that the "harsh political reality" should also be seen.
"You have North Macedonia, which is blocked. You have Serbia with more than two years of the biggest, strongest and most serious internal unrest and demonstrations, on the verge of civil war. You have Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Dodik who has been dragging out separation or no separation for years, and hey, he's out. You have Banjska, which passed in 2023 without a serious remark or articulation by anyone in the EU, we pretend it didn't happen. That's reality," he said, as quoted Večernji list from Zagreb.
We need to be "really sober about expansion and the changing global context," he added.
"I am in favor of enlargement, I think that everyone is trying to join, but they need to stabilize politically," Plenković said.
