Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama today asked NATO to strengthen its military presence in Kosovo and secure the border with Serbia.
"Kosovo's border with Serbia is out of control," said Rama in Skopje, after an unofficial meeting of NATO members from the Western Balkans.
According to Rama, the border area is used for illegal activities, including the smuggling of narcotics and weapons and the infiltration of ultra-nationalists, which could lead to "major disturbances" in the region.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that the alliance does not perceive any military threats to its allies in the Western Balkans, but it does note the rise of tensions, especially in Kosovo. They say that NATO has sent a reinforcement of about 1.000 soldiers to Kosovo, as well as heavier weapons, reports AP.
"Of course we are careful." We are carefully monitoring the situation and will do what is necessary to protect and defend our allies," Stoltenberg said.
