Member of the ruling SNS and a lawyer Vladimir Djukanovic he posted on social media and gave his opinion on the excavation of lithium in Serbia.
On his profile on the X social network, Đukanović commented on the opposition of some citizens to lithium mining and wrote that "even in the time of King Milan, we had madmen who were against the introduction of street lighting".
"They were also against the introduction of railways." Here, the newspapers insulted Tesla as a mad scientist. So even today we have morons who oppose the exploitation of lithium. Already seen. However, we should not pay attention to such things, but work in the state's interest. They will dig, but what will they do!", he concluded.
He called the opponents of exploitation the high traitors of Serbia.
"I would ask all those who are against the exploitation of lithium, who are the absolute traitors of Serbia, to block me at the same second and to leave my profile. I have no intention of arguing with depressed and limited people. After all, there is nothing to argue with traitors. This especially applies to German mercenaries from fake environmental associations, as well as Udba nationalists," Đukanović announced.
To dig or not to dig
Let's remind story about the Jadar Project and lithium mining in the vicinity of Loznica came into the public spotlight again after the publication of an article in the British newspaper "Financial Times", in which it is said that Serbia is preparing to to give permission to Rio Tinto for the opening of the largest lithium mine in Europe.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić told this media that the new guarantees of this company and the European Union (EU) are a response to the concerns of the citizens of Serbia whether lithium mining project to meet the necessary environmental standards.
In addition, he expects this project to be officially presented in Belgrade next month, and he hopes it will bring business and political leaders together.
However, these statements of the President of Serbia contradict the decision of the Government of Serbia, which stopped this project in January 2022. "We put an end to Rio Tinto in Serbia," emphasized the Prime Minister at the time, Ana Brnabić.
It was speculated months ago that this project was not put an end to, and it seems that it has now received an official version. Both the previous and current governments recognize a great development opportunity for Serbia in lithium mining and the opening of battery factories for which it is used.
Protest on Vidovdan in Loznica against Rio Tinto
After President Vučić's announcement, representatives of the "Ne damo Jadar" association announced a large protest on June 28 in front of the offices of the Rio Tinto company in Loznica.
Marija Petković, a resident of Gornji Nedeljica, invited all those interested to come to Loznica that day, while activist Zlatko Kokanović said that representatives of numerous non-governmental organizations, as well as agricultural associations, would also appear at the protest that day.
"Then there will be some surprises for the municipal government and for the Rio Tinto company itself," said Petković.
She added that they "have information" that the authorities want to adopt the Spatial Plan secretly and that, if that happens, they may organize a protest even before Vidovdan.
The co-president of the Zajedno party and a professor at the Faculty of Biology in Belgrade, Biljana Stojković, joined the call for protest.
