German government spokesman Wolfgang Bichner announced that Chancellor Olaf Scholz will receive Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Berlin on Wednesday, May 4. "At the center of the talks will be further coordination regarding the war in Ukraine, as well as bilateral and regional topics," Bichner said in a statement.
Kosovo, in fact the relations between Kosovo and Serbia, were not directly mentioned as a topic of conversation, but they will certainly be on the table, because Scholz will also meet with the Prime Minister of the Pristina interim authorities, Albin Kurti, on the same day.
It will be Vučić's first meeting with the new German chancellor Scholz, and last month in Belgrade and Pristina the head of German diplomacy, Analena Berbock, was there. The meeting between Solac and Vučić shows the importance of mutual recognition of Kosovo and Serbia, and the introduction of sanctions against Russia due to its aggression against Ukraine, something that only Serbia, along with Belarus, has not done so far.
For Germany, the mutual recognition, that is, the "normalization of relations" between Kosovo and Serbia, was one of the burning European issues even during the reign of Angela Merkel, whom Scholz succeeded as prime minister. The war in Ukraine only intensified the pressure to reach a "comprehensive solution" as soon as possible.
That after the conversation between Solac and Vučić, some important news for Serbia may also be announced, is shown by the change in the date of the press conference, i.e. the address to the nation by Aleksandar Vučić, which was announced for today, but was moved to May 6, after Vučić's return from Berlin.
