Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were not the first heroes of the anti-mafia movement, but they appeared at a time when it was beginning to develop and spread, borne of general dissatisfaction. Thirty years ago, they were stopped with a well-founded suspicion that the mafia was not alone in this dirty business. During the last years of their increasingly successful careers, both judges encountered a hidden but permanent odium from the institutions.
