President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Oleksandr Sirsky from the post of Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. In the future, the army will be led by General Mihajlo Drapati, one of the most respected commanders of the younger generation
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky he replaced the general Oleksandr Syrsky from the position of Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and appointed General Mykhailo Drapati as his successor, in the biggest change in the military leadership of the country since February 2024, reports the Associated Press agency.
The decision came after several days of protests across Ukraine, during which demonstrators demanded Sirsky's removal, accusing him of an outdated, Soviet style of command and heavy losses at the front. The protests followed the political crisis caused by the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who is considered by some of the public to be key to the modernization of the Ukrainian army.
Addressing the public, Zelensky said that the decision was made after consultation with the military leadership and that he shares a common goal with the new commander - strengthening the defense of Ukraine, defeating Russia and creating conditions for a just peace.

The new Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapati is considered one of the most respected commanders of the younger generation of Ukrainian officers. He stood out in the battles since 2014, and in the army he is known as an advocate of modernization, greater responsibility of commanders and adaptation to the modern way of warfare.
Sirsky came to the head of the Ukrainian army in February 2024, when he succeeded Valery Zaluzhny. During the Russian invasion, he led the defense of Kiev and the counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region, but later he was exposed to increasingly harsh criticism for the way he conducted operations and the heavy losses among Ukrainian forces.
Analysts estimate that this change represents Zelenskiy's attempt to respond to the growing dissatisfaction of the public and the army, but also to speed up reforms at a time when the war with Russia is entering a new, demanding phase.
