The man was known to the Secret Service, and he approached the compound White houses on Saturday night, pulled a rifle from his bag and opened fire before Secret Service officers shot him and fatally wounded him. He later died in the hospital, reports the Associated Press.
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
A bystander was also hit, but a police official said it was unclear whether that person was hit by the suspect's first shots or those fired later by officers.
The Secret Service said none of its officers were injured, and neither was Trump, who was originally scheduled to spend the weekend at his golf club in New Jersey but changed his plans.
Already arrested
According to District of Columbia court records, Best was arrested in July 2025 after attempting to enter another White House checkpoint without authorization. He disobeyed the officers' orders to stop, claiming to be Jesus Christ and wanting to be arrested.
On that occasion, the first hearing was held and a "pre-trial restraining order" was issued - a measure ordering the accused not to approach a person or area before the trial.
This is third time in the last month that there were shootings near the president, after the incident at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in April and near the Washington Monument in early May.
