Markwayne Mullin (49) will be the head of the Ministry of Internal Security, which has been the most talked about in the past year in America. It also works within it ICE - US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is constantly under criticism because its members killed people in the street.
Malin will take over the ministry, which is in chaos, writes CNN. Funding for this institution ended on February 14. Lawmakers and the administration have been negotiating in an effort to end the shutdown, but no deal has yet been reached. Democrats have demanded changes to immigration enforcement procedures and tactics after of the fatal shootings of Alex Pretty and Renee Goode in Minnesota.
Malin is a former MMA fighter and is referred to by the Guardian as a "Maga Warrior". In January, after ICE agents killed people, Malin said on social media that he stood by the Department of Homeland Security and that "ICE agents are not Disney villains."
"These Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are true American patriots who do the hard work to keep our nation safe," he wrote.
During his confirmation hearing, Malin did apologize for calling Alex Pretty a "disturbed person" shortly after the shooting.
The temperament of the new minister
The final confirmation vote was 54 to 45, with Republican Sen. Rand Paul voting "no" and Democratic Sens. John Fetterman and Martin Heinrich voting "yes."
Before he was confirmed, Mullin argued to his Senate colleagues that he would be a different leader at the Department of Homeland Security and faced questions about his temperament.
Rand Paul, who chairs the Senate National Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, sharply criticized Malin's temper and accused him of having "anger issues." During the hearing, Paul pointed to Mullin's public comments that Paul was a "snake" and that he "understood" why Paul's neighbor attacked him in 2017, as well as a 2023 Senate hearing where Mullin appeared ready to physically confront a witness.
Fetterman and Heinrich, on the other hand, both spoke of their friendship with Malina. After voting for Malino's nomination on Sunday, Heinrich insisted in a statement that they could have a "constructive" relationship and claimed that Malino would not be pressured by other White House officials. Heinrich, who served with Mullin in the House of Representatives, said he "saw firsthand that Markwain is not someone I can just get to change his views."
