Iran has denied responsibility for the drone attack on the US military base in Jordan, known as Tower 22. Tehran says that blaming Iran has "political aims", it says Deutsche says.
In the deadly attack, three American soldiers were killed and at least 34 were injured.
US President Joe Biden threatened retaliation. "There should be no doubt that we will react!" he said. "The United States will hold those responsible to account at a time and in a manner we choose," Biden added.
Conflicting information
The attack took place Saturday night in northeastern Jordan, near the border with Syria, Biden said.
Jordanian state television, however, quoted a government spokesman as saying the attack took place outside Jordan - on the Syrian side of the border.
Pro-Iranian paramilitary troops in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack and said they had attacked four US military bases, including three in Syria. Jordan borders both Syria and Iraq in the northeast.
These are the first American soldiers killed in attacks by Iran-backed paramilitary units on American troops across the Middle East.
The US government is still gathering evidence, but the attack, as Biden said, was carried out by "radical militant groups supported by Iran" operating in Syria and Iraq. "The US continues its actions in the fight against terrorism," the US president added.
Iran rejects the accusations.
According to media reports, the Iranian government has denied any responsibility for the drone attack on US troops. These accusations were made with the political aim of "reversing the reality in the region", said the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Kanani, as reported by the state news agency IRNA.
It was the response of resistance groups in the region "to the war crimes and genocide of the Zionist regime," Kanani added, targeting Israel as Iran's greatest enemy. He claimed that these "resistance groups" decide their own moves.
Earlier, British Foreign Minister David Cameron called on Tehran to calm tensions. "We condemn in the strongest terms attacks by paramilitary troops allied with Iran against American forces." We continue to call on Iran to de-escalate the situation in the region," Cameron wrote on Platform X.
The drone apparently came from Syria
CNN reported that the drone came from Iran-backed fighters, but was apparently sent from Syria. It is unclear why US air defenses were unable to intercept it.
US bases in Iraq and Syria have recently been targeted by drone and missile attacks. The US has repeatedly stated that it fears that the conflict in the Middle East could turn into a regional war.
Pro-Iranian paramilitaries have carried out numerous attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria since mid-October, wounding dozens of soldiers.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights counted more than a hundred attacks on anti-terrorist coalition bases in Syria. In the past, the Pentagon emphasized that infrastructure was mostly not destroyed in the attacks. The US responded with several airstrikes.
As of the summer of 2023, about 3.000 American soldiers are stationed in Jordan, as reported by the Axios portal. Among other things, they support Jordan in the fight against the terrorist Islamic State.
