Four years since the beginning of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, about two million soldiers on both sides have been killed or wounded, according to the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Since the beginning of the "special operation" Vladimir Putin, i.e. Russia's aggression against Ukraine, about two million soldiers were killed or wounded on both sides, according to a major study by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) published by ""The New York Times."
Despite the great numerical superiority, Russia is currently going through a critical period, so in the first half of 2026, the rate of losses of Russian soldiers officially exceeded the Kremlin's mobilization capabilities for the first time, according to a study based on American and British intelligence.
As of February 2022, 1,4 million Russian soldiers have been killed (about 450.000) or wounded. The New York Times notes that this figure is four times greater than all of the United States' combat losses in all military conflicts combined since the end of World War II.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces have lost between 525.000 and 625.000 personnel since the beginning of the armed conflict, of which the number of dead is estimated at between 125.000 and 150.000. The authors of the study note that, considering the total size of the Ukrainian army, these figures are extremely painful for Kyiv. At the moment, approximately 250.000 Ukrainian soldiers are facing about 400.000 occupying soldiers at the front.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates that the monthly losses of the Russian army will range from 30.000 to 34.000. Meanwhile, the highest recruitment rate (which includes prisoners, debtors and huge payments) only reaches 27.000 recruits per month. Russia is physically losing more people than it can gather.
