The American Federal Police arrested in Mobile, u American to the federal state of Alabama Hamdi Alukić (70) on charges of war crimes against civilians committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992.
A suspected war criminal from Bosnia was arrested while hiding in Alabama, where he lived for decades as a "cool" neighbor who sold eggs to Walmart, writes the New York Post.
Hamdija Alukić, today a 70-year-old family man, was arrested for the brutal murders of two civilians during war crimes in 1992, reports WALA-TV.
In one case, he and other members of paramilitary formations allegedly ambushed car, shot the driver and then set fire to the vehicle while the body was still inside, according to court documents obtained by this media.
In another case, the New York Post reports, he allegedly led an attack in which two houses were set on fire while people were inside - police officer later found the burned remains of his father, the indictment states.
Alukic moved to Wilmer, a rural part of Mobile, where his neighbors never suspected his ties to the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to the New York Post.
"They were always cool," one former neighbor said of Alukic and his family.
"They had dogs, chickens and sold eggs to Walmart and stuff. I went to them a few times growing up," the neighbor said.
Alukic is currently in the Baldwin County Jail without bail and is facing extradition proceedings to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
