Pope Francis suffered a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis that required high doses of oxygen and is in critical condition, he said Vatican.
The statement added that Pope Francis, who has been in the hospital for a week, received blood transfusions after tests showed a condition related to anemia.
"The Holy Father still remains awake, he spent the day in an armchair, although in more pain than yesterday." At this moment, the prognosis is uncertain," the Vatican said in a statement.
Earlier, doctors announced that the pope is suffering from pneumonia and a complex respiratory infection, and his health condition remains uncertain.
He is expected to remain in the hospital for at least another week.
The Pope was admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital on February 14, after a week-long bout of bronchitis worsened.
