The biggest Russian oil refinery in Omsk she was the target of an attack drones, Ukrainian authorities announced, while Russian officials confirmed that the area had been attacked by drones and that the extent of the damage was being determined. According to available information, a fire broke out in the refinery complex.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the attack was carried out by Special Forces deep strike units, which claim to have hit key energy infrastructure in Omsk, a city more than 2.500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Omsk Region Governor Vitaly Hotsenko confirmed that enemy drones were shot down over the region, but did not give details about possible damage to the refinery. At the same time, videos and photos appeared on social networks showing thick smoke over the industrial zone.
The refinery in Omsk, owned by Gazprom Neft, is considered the largest in Russia. It processes more than 20 million tons of crude oil annually and produces a significant portion of gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel for the Russian market.
If it is confirmed that the plant was seriously damaged, it would represent one of the deepest Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory since the beginning of the war. Omsk is located deep in Siberia and so far has not been among the targets of Ukrainian attacks, unlike numerous refineries in the European part of Russia that have been repeatedly targeted by drones in the past months.
The attack on the refinery took place at a time when both sides are continuing intense airstrikes.
Overnight, Russia carried out massive missile and drone attacks on several cities in Ukraine, while Kiev continues its campaign of targeting Russian energy infrastructure, which it considers crucial for financing war operations.
