American giant Google has announced that it will partner with startup "Kairos Power" to build seven small nuclear reactors in the USA. The goal of the agreement is to add 500 megawatts of nuclear power from small modular reactors (SMRs) by the end of the decade. The first one is expected to start operating by 2030, while the rest will arrive by 2035, reports "BBC".
It is the first corporate deal to buy nuclear power from SMRs. Small modular reactors are smaller than existing reactors. Their components are built in a factory rather than on site, which can help reduce construction costs compared to full-scale factories.
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission will need to grant Kairos design and construction permits for these plans. The startup has already received approval for a demonstration reactor in Tennessee, with a date planned for 2027.
The two companies did not disclose financial details of the arrangement. Google says the contract structure will help reduce costs and enable power for the network sooner.
The expansion of artificial intelligence โ as well as the huge amount of energy required for data centers โ has led to several agreements between big tech companies and the nuclear industry. In September, Microsoft reached an agreement with Constellation Energy to bring the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania back online. In March, Amazon bought a nuclear-powered data center from Talen Energy.
